Fitch-Rona Training
Fitch-Rona offers "in-house" training at progressive levels: EMT-Basic, EMT-IV Tech., EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic. Coursework is supervised by the training committee and our medical director; Mark Bogner, M.D., UW Med Flight Physician, and Assistant Professor / Section of Emergency Medicine at University of Wisconsin Medical School. Continued education typically involves clinical, didactic and field experience. Emphasis is placed on skills, such as patient assessment, and managing respiratory, trauma, cardiac, medical and childbirth emergencies. Quality assurance review as well as peer evaluation have also been incorporated into the training curriculum at Fitch-Rona.
What is involved in becoming a Paramedic?
Formal training and certification is needed to become an EMT or paramedic. All 50 states have a certification procedure. In most states and the District of Columbia, registration with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians is required at some or all levels of certification. Other states administer their own certification examination or provide the option of taking the NREMT examination. To maintain certification or licensure, paramedics must re-register every 2 years. In order to re-register, an individual must be working as a paramedic and fulfill a 48-72 credit hour continuing education requirement within that licensure period.
EMT-Paramedic requires the most advanced level of training. At this level, the caregiver receives additional training in anatomy, physiology and pathology. The paramedic masters more advanced skills. A typical paramedic program usually lasts up to 2 years and results in an associate degree in applied science. Due to the longer training requirement, almost all EMT-Paramedics are in career positions, rather than being volunteers.
